Are you starting out in newborn photography Dublin? Perhaps you’ve found out that you have a special love for babies and want to capture beautiful moments with them, but you don’t know how to start out? Don’t look far. I have compiled a list of must-have equipment you need to start out just right.
While it is true that all the best gadgets in the world won’t make you a good photographer, and it eventually depends on the skills you develop and the experiences you gain, you need them to bring out your best works. A chauffeur, no matter how talented and good he is on the job, is nothing without a car.
You don’t need lots of equipment to start up as a new-born photographer. Just a few things I’ll mention below and you are all set and good to go.
Any good, modern digital camera will do. Since the baby is usually between 2 to 3 weeks old and won’t move around as much, advanced function cameras are not so necessary. However, the types of lenses you employ makes all the difference. High quality images with shallow field depths is all you need in new-born photography. To attain these, experts generally recommend prime and macro lenses. Compared with zoom lenses, prime lenses take sharper pictures, perform better in low light environs and are generally less expensive. The downside is that you’ll have to move away from or towards the baby in which case, zoom lenses simply allow you zoom in or out.
Macro lenses are a must-have. They are able to capture the minutest close-up details of the tiny hands and feet. To use them effectively however, you need to get a tripod to help you hold the camera steady. Moreover, when too close, macro lenses tend to produce objects with blurred backgrounds. So, you need to be really still. Get a tripod.
Lighting can make the difference between a good and bad newborn photography Dublin shoot.
It is not recommended to use flash lights and full studio light due to babies being highly sensitive and still in the process of development. Sharp, bright lights can startle them or cause irrevocable damage.
Natural light will do just fine, although without reflectors, you have little control over it. These reflectors are also foldable and can be carried around easily. You will also need reflector holders and light stands to mount these reflectors. These are essential, especially if you do not have an assistant to regularly hold up the reflector anytime.
If natural light is not available or you want to situate your own source of light, soft boxes come highly recommended like we use at Visible Moments Photography. These devices can mimic natural light by creating even and diffused lighting.
Backdrop stands are used to create the amazing background you want.
If you plan to do lots of new-born baby shoots, they are essential. You don’t want just one background popping up in the entirety of your pictures; that will be stale and routine. Clamps are also needed to easily append any type of cloth for the background to the backdrop stand.
While there are other things you will need as you get better, these are enough to start you up on one of the most amazing jobs ever.
